Michael Scarrott, Biripi artist and beekeeper

Contemporary Aboriginal Art

Michael Scarrott is a proud gay Biripi man, multidisciplinary creator, and works with new media exploring existential themes relating to ancestry and nature.

Michael is a Cook family descendant from Gloucester NSW, his family clan totem is the possum and includes many Aboriginal creatives including acclaimed painter Uncle Gordon Syron.

A local beekeeper, Michael was first inspired to paint with wax in 2015 following the passing of his Biripi Grandmother. His wax paintings depict local scenes and have exhibited on Country over NAIDOC through several years. Michael's wax artwork Guyiwan (Shark), the Biripi tribal totem, was recently commissioned for permanent display on Country at the Taree University Campus.

Most recently, Michael was one of 4 artists to be selected to showcase at Westfield Sydney over NAIDOC week 2024 in partnership with Boomalli Aboriginal Art Gallery.  

Michael is the founding Director of Glow Sky Media Pty Ltd (GSM) which recently won the Monash University National Indigenous Innovation Challenge and is working to establish a recycling scheme in Australia for premium photoluminescent material. Michael's unique luminescent prints are charged by light and produce high contrast multi coloured glow affects from a patented process. The company website is http://www.glowskymedia.com

GSM is currently participating in the YARPA GROW 2024 Indigenous business accelerator facilitated by the University of Western Sydney and YARPA Hub (NSW Aboriginal Land Council) is Supply Nation registered and a certified assured member of the NSW Indigenous Chamber of Commerce.
