Exhibition Opening - Aunty Lila Kirby: Journeys

MEET THE ARTIST – AN AFTERNOON OF STORY AND SONG

You’re invited to help us launch a very special guest exhibition in our new dedicated feature space, the Spotlight Gallery.

We are honoured to display a selection of works by Aunty Lila Kirby, a respected Central Coast First Nations elder. Her people are Wiradjuri (Central NSW) and Yutta Yutta (Murray and Goulburn River regions). She is a powerful speaker, storyteller, artist and songwriter, painting the ancient stories of her people as they are given to her by her forefathers. Aunty Lila has travelled extensively, sharing stories and knowledge with other First Nations peoples in the USA, Hawaii, and Fiji.

Her honest, authentic artworks are rarely exhibited, but have been sought by collectors in Australia and internationally. She seeks to spread a message of peace, and to show people how to connect to their own stories and to the land.

Come and meet Aunty Lila in person, hear her speak about her work, life, inspiration and Dreaming – and share a song or two! This is an afternoon you won’t forget.

“The stories come from my forefathers, from the old ones of long ago that came before me, and when I paint they keep watch over me. I’ve got to make sure I tell the stories correctly, the way they’re meant to be told. Paint your stories and what you’re feeling. Put it out there. Say “That’s what I feel.” Stand up and be proud of what you’ve done. Open up your senses and your feelings and don’t be afraid to speak.  Just tell your truth.”
